Description
Helps prevent various diseases
Therapeutic Indications:
Vitamin K consists of two groups, one called Vitamin K1, available in green leafy vegetables, and K2, which is synthesized by intestinal bacteria and is also available in cheese and natto (fermented soybeans – a typical Japanese product). Most people ingest enough vitamin K for proper blood coagulation. However, recent studies show that the current recommended daily allowance is not sufficient to support bone and vascular health functions.
In blood coagulation, the role of vitamin K has been known since 1930. It is crucial in the formation of 8 coagulation factors that convert soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin in circulation. Fibrin is directly used to form clots. Most people have sufficient vitamin K content to support this function.
Regarding bone health, research indicates that the non-carboxylation of the Gla-Osteocalcin protein is correlated with low bone density and, consequently, a higher risk factor. Supplementation with vitamin K2, and not K1, reduced the incidence of fractures, the rate of bone mineral density loss, and increased bone strength.
In blood circulation, recent research has revealed that the matrix Gla proteins can inhibit the calcification of blood vessels and even reverse the calcification process and restore arterial flexibility. For this process, vitamin K2 is necessary.
